sacrificing space for form

Hair braiding in the black community happens in discursive spaces - beauty salons, living room floors, kitchen tables - in which a practice created for and by black people is experienced in a context for cultural exchange. Hair braiding is an ethnographic site for exploration and description, serving as a space for ritualized activity within a cultural community. Hair is a site of performance, reflection, remembrance - and for myself, a search for the parts of me that were left behind in the ocean.
